Unfashionable

I have just began reading a new book called Unfashionable by Tullian Tchividjian.  The tag line of the book is "making a difference in the world by being different."

unfashionable

I am about one third into the book and it has caught my attention.  The author is the grandson of Billy Graham.

In the book he points out the need for Christians to be in the world but not of the world.  He argues that the church and christians cannot seek so hard after relevance that we miss the relevance of the Gospel  The good news of Christ is relevant and has always been relevant.  I agree with him.  We cannot ever out do the craftiness, coolness and allure of the world.  We shouldn't event try.  We should as believers in the Lord Jesus point the world to him.  He is attractive, He is appealing and He draws  men and women to himself.

The attractional quality of the church is in its worship of the King.  That is what people are attracted to.  We can wow them with our music (any kind), our programs, our buildings and our style but it will only be short lived.  If we point people to the Savior then the attraction will be permanent and meaningful.

We here at Williamstown Baptist Church our approach should be just like that.  What we should do is invite, tell, come ourselves to spend time worshipping the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  We can package church however we desire (and there are plenty of options.) The church must stop its  inclination to make the expression of our faith the point and make Jesus Christ the point.
